General description

Haemoglobin is the main component of red blood cells and is responsible for their red colour. Its normal concentration in erythrocytes is 34%. Haemoglobin is the most important respiratory protein in vertebrates by virtue of its ability to transport oxygen from the lungs to body tissues and facilitate the return transport of carbon dioxide.


Haemoglobin was used in the development of a rapid enzyme immunoassay for the detection of retinol-binding protein. It was also used in the inhibition of human platelet reactivity by endothelium-derived relaxing factor.

Biochemical / Physiological Actions

The Fe2 + / Fe3 + balance is a physiological indicator of blood oxygenation. Deoxygenated haemoglobin complements a feedback loop by reducing nitrate to NO, a vasodilator that improves blood flow to oxygen-deprived tissues.


Since native haemoglobin is easily oxidized in air, these preparations can be predominantly methemoglobin.

HemogloBind ™ comes from a class of solid-phase or surface-based elastomeric polyelectrolyte surfaces that bind proteins through empirically derived chemistry that combines elements of polymer composition, crosslinking architecture, and charge properties. HemogloBind ™ is designed for a high degree of selectivity and does not cross-react with the most common components of serum, making it an excellent tool in many applications.

These include analytical protocols where optical interference is problematic, such as bilirubin analysis and bulk serum clarification. Haemoglobin variants, as in thalassemia, bind with a differential affinity for HemogloBind ™. For haemoglobin purification and/or analysis, the moderate elevation of pH will facilitate desorption of haemoglobin bound to HemogloBind ™.
